ANSWERS TO WEEK #2 TRIVIA CHALLENGE:
1. How did the Tour De France come about?
| The Tour De France came about because of a feud between two rival French sports newspapers. Le Velo was the original publication. It's competitor, L'Auto-velo, was founded by a former advertiser who was unhappy with Le Velo's editorial policies. Le Velo filed and won a trademark suit against its competitor, and forced it to change the newspaper name from L'Auto-velo, to L'Auto. Henri Desgrange, editor for L'Auto, was very concerned that the name change would kill the newspaper. So he and his cycling reporter, Georges Lefevre, came up with the idea of a six-day race over roads and through towns as a publicity stunt, to increase circulation of L'Auto. |
2. What year did the Tour De France begin?
1903
3. Who has won the Tour De France championship more times
than any other contestant and how many times has he won?
Lance Armstrong, 7 times
4. Name the Oldest and Youngest winners of the Tour De France
championship and give their age at the time of their win.
Oldest: Firmin Lambot, Age 36
Youngest: Henri Cornet, Age 20 (technically 19 years and 50 weeks)
5. Who has ridden the most times in the Tour De France?
Joop Zoetemelk has ridden 16 times.
6. What is the significance of the colored jerseys, and what are the colors?
|
Jerseys are worn by leaders in general time, points, best climber and youth general time: 4) White Jersey: Identifies the best Young Rider, 25 and under |
7. What was the fastest average over the whole Tour and by whom?
| DUE TO SOME AMBIGUITY, THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN THROWN OUT! While Lance Armstrong is definitely the person considered to have the fastest average over the Tour, different sources are citing different times & years for his fastest time! 1) While the Tour De France website has his fastest time (this past July 2005) at 41.654 kph, this time has not been officially confirmed as yet on the site. 2) Other very reliable sources, such as the Guiness Book of Records, cite his time in 1999 at 40.276 kph as the fastest. So to be fair, we are dropping this question from the list! |
8. How long is the Tour De France?C
| This question had some ambiguity as well... For instance, how "long" in length, or how "long" in time:
1) In time, the Tour is held over 3 weeks in July 2) In length, the Tour has varied -- in 1903 it was 2388 kilometers (1400 miles) and in recent years it has ranged from 3500 to about 4000 kilometers. The most recent Tour was 3607 kilometers. So again, in the interest of fairness, we were liberal in our acceptance of answers to this question! |
